The Olympic sailing events consist of four classes for men, four for women, and three mixed classes (open to men and women – although only one women is competing). Races in all Olympic events are a sailed in a fleet racing format of ten series races (fifteen for 49er), followed by the Olympic Medal Race. The sailors race around the Olympic sailing course, with each boat earning a score equal to its finishing position. The sailors with the 10 (thirteen for the 49er) best overall scores for each boat class, move up and compete for a medal in the Olympic medal race for their class.
The Olympic Medal Races are scored double points based on finish position, with the Olympic sailing medals in each event decided based on the overall points in all Olympic races.
The Olympic sailing competitions for the 2008 Olympics are taking place in Qingdao, China, near the Qingdao International Marina.
